Driving the Hi-Line

Today we drove Hwy 2 from Ft. Peck to Shelby for a total trip of 296 miles.  To Montanans this road is known as the “Hi-Line” since it follows the BNSF rail line which is the northern most rail line in the region.  The drive was very nice as we traveled mostly through plains and wheat fields.  To a former Kansan it felt right at home with the wheat waving in the wind and lots of small towns with elevators.  Some of the towns had some really neat old elevators.  We found a great campsite in Shelby at a city park on the north part of the city called Lake Sheloole Park.  It’s a really nice park with about 60 sites and at $18 for electric it’s a good value.  The only down side of the park are the swarms of mosquitos.  We will be here two nights since our reservations in Glacier are not until Tuesday.

Montana is the third largest wheat producer so lots of wheat fields which are almost ready to cutCIMG2018a

A few for the old grain elevators along the way.  Missed the best one in Chester

  1. The were saying on the news the other night that the mosquitoes are especially bad this year because of the really wet spring. Hope you have your bug spray with you.
